How GIS works
Spatial and Non-spatial Data
- Spatial data refers to geographic areas or features. Features occupies a location.
- Non-spatial data has no specific location in space. It can however, have a geographic component and be linked to a geographic location
- Tabular and attribute data are non-spatial but can be linked to location.
- Example: In the Portland map, a park is a spatial feature and the associated information about the park name, area, administrative code and type code are non-spatial attributes which are linked to the park by its location. Read more

What Can You Do with GIS?
Geo-information query and analysis
GIS databases and geographic information search query capabilities, saving a lot of companies millions of dollars. GIS can:
- Shorten the time to answer customer requests
- Find the land suitable for development
- In food, soil and weather to find correlation between the
- Electric line fault location
Which are the components of the GIS?
From the application point of view, geographic information system consists of hardware, software, data, personnel and methods, composed of five parts. Hardware and software for geographic information system to provide the environment; data is an important content of GIS; approach is building GIS solutions; personnel is the key to system construction and dynamic factors,A direct impact on and the coordination of several other components.

What is the relationship between GIS and GPS?
Precisely, GPS (Global Positioning System) is the United States, a satellite positioning system (there are other countries and regions around the world of satellite positioning systems, such as our country is developed “Beidou navigation and positioning system”). Relative to the GIS, the satellite positioning system for more people are familiar with, has been more and more into people’s production and daily life, such as mapping, field data collection, vehicle navigation, tourism and so on.
